About Me
Our Story
My brother, Ben, and I started this little business when he had the idea of creating rings shaped into the meanders of rivers, after being inspired by the brook that runs through our family farm, where we spent our weekends as kids, making dams, building a tree house and swimming when it was flooded. We also spent a lot of time in Pembrokeshire, in a caravan on a farm between Tenby and Saundersfoot, which we consider a home from home, and we realised that we could also make rings that followed the shape of coastlines.
At the time, Ben had finished a masters in Engineering and was in the process of becoming a Physics teacher, whilst I was at our local uni studying Forensic Psychology. We both have always loved art and design, but hadn't had the opportunity to do anything arty since our GCSE's, so being able to do something creative in the evenings was perfect.
Eventually, Ben became too busy with teaching, buying a house and general life, and so he passed the blowtorch onto me. But, he's always there when I need an honest opinion, advice or someone to discuss design ideas with.
The beginning
The River & Coastline Ring has since expanded to a whole collection with necklaces, earrings and soon bracelets too. I have also created an Ear Tag collection after being inspired by one of our injured pet lambs that unfortunately didn't make it, and I thought it would be nice to have something to remember him by. I know that others in the farming community also develop a deep love for their livestock, whether they have a 10 animals or 1000, and knew that others would have had the same thought.
Most recently, I have expanded into sea glass pieces, which has tested my skill, patience and sanity. I have always loved collected cool shells and sea glass from beaches, and loved the thought of being able to have a piece of my favourite beach, Monkstone, with me wherever I go, even in the very landlocked Worcestershire. Even my family and friends now spend time combing the beach on their holidays looking for sea glass to add to my collection, and Ben's birthday and Christmas present to me this year is a trip to Seaham together, which is notorious for having the best sea glass beach in the UK.
Expanding
I love making all of my designs, but my favourites are always personalised pieces, and getting to hear the stories behind them. I've helped someone remember their all time favourite sheep, Jolelne, a mother to gift her children something to remember their home by as they fly the nest, a friend cheer up a loved one after bad news and a husband to help his wife remember her family home in India. I've always been very sentimental, and I love that I get to make special gifts for other people that mean so much, and will be with them forever.
Though I have recently graduated, I currently have no plans to go into Forensic Psychology and my dream is to one day be able to make jewellery full time, and be able to help on the farm during busier times like lambing and shearing. This year I'm planning to attend more markets, especially local county shows and try sand casting.
Now and the future
Our Values
Sustainability
Back British Farming
Unsurprisingly I'm very supportive of buying British. I'm so proud of the welfare standards my dad maintains on our family farm that produces such high quality meat. The UK rules and regulations around agriculture mean that our welfare standards are arguably the highest in the world. Supporting our farmers by buying British not only keeps small family farms running, but helps famers to maintain and even improve the wonderful countryside, from planting trees and cutting hedges to promote growth, to maintaining ditches to reduce flooding.
Buying British also means there are no air miles in the food you're eating. We are very fortunate to be able to grow a lot of the vegetables we eat. However, what we don't grow and in winter, we aim to buy only if it's in season and grown here, by checking the label.
I hope to one day be able to run special sale events on my Ear Tag Collection and Hoof Print Collection, where a portion of the sale goes to a charity that supports people in agriculture, such as RABI, the Farming Community Network and the Farm Safety Foundation (Yellow Wellies).
Mental health is particularly important to me, both as a Forensic Psychology graduate, and as someone who has struggled with mental health issues for a very long time. Though the stigma around mental health is getting better, there is still a lot of misunderstanding and a lack of awareness around it. This value ties in with Back British Farming, as poor mental health is now recognised as one of the biggest issues that farmers face, with 3 farmers a week losing their battle with mental illness, which is why I hope to one day run charity sales that will benefit agricultural charities that help with mental health.
Mental Health Awareness
Jewellery
All our jewellery is made from recycled Sterling silver or 9ct gold. On top of that, every off cut, failed experiment and file shaving is saved to melt down and make into a personalised Eco Pebble necklace or ring, so absolutely none of it is wasted.
Packaging
Every bit of packaging we buy, from our jewellery boxes and tissue paper, to packing tape and boxes, is recyclable, and most of it was made from recycled materials. Any plastic used has not been bought, but kept from packages received by us and our family (mostly from my Grandma who taught me that everything can have a second life if you're imaginative enough- hence my using her hearing aid pots to store scrap silver and sea glass!).
Supporting Local
We try to source everything from local and British businesses to reduce our air miles. Our jewellery materials come from a supplier in Birmingham, our packaging comes from various British businesses and extras come from British sellers on Etsy.
